Citizen Soldiers and Sailor Songs – The Draft Decades

Korean War vintage – The From Here to Eternity Version’s missing the first and last stanza, but worth the watch:

The complete version

Around 1956-’57 when Elvis was drafted

Sailor around 1957

A million men or more left their hearts in San Francisco to be reminded by this song.  When we returned and the troop ships passed under the Golden Gate a million uniform hats went into the air:

The Berlin Crisis of 1961 brought this one to the top.  I listened to it in basic training along with everyone else they could drag out of the sticks to wear a uniform:

The constant ‘brink of war’ cold war military also serving as armies of occupation:

Then along came Vietnam

And those who decided Canada made more sense

than the Okie from Muskogie

and politicians singing For God Country and My Baby to the tune of 1000 bottles of beer on the wall in 10 part harmony for another half-century.

  1. Do you play any instrument? I just started a bit later in life to really play music. It’s a fantastic communicative dimension. I starve for the moments I play music with others. I am not a professional musician, not even specially skilled. But I know what happens when I let my soul talk through music. A kind of a miracle, don’t believe in miracles really, but can’t find a better word. It’s difficult to find music partners, as difficult as it is to find life partners. No matter how skilled musician you are, if the soul doesn’t come to talk, it ‘s just not right. All is very closed to the concept of love and all that is around it. Music is a vibration, made of waves. Is love and all around it a question of vibration and waves? Take care Jules 🙂

    • Hi Anita: I love music of most varieties and genre but don’t play an instrument. Lousy hearing might be the reason which also allows me to sing a lot, though only when it’s just me and the cats and chickens. I’d guess vibration and waves are one of the ways to think of just about everything in this universe. Thanks for coming by. Jules

  2. 😀 Jules!

  3. Love The Animals, Jules.
